Surani Guneratne is a licensed social worker with over 25 years of experience working in community mental health, pediatric and adult medical social work. She has experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, individuals, couples and geriatric populations from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. She has experience working with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, severe mental health illnesses, grief and trauma. Surani 's general areas of competence include assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues ranging from ADHD, anxiety and couples and family issues. She utilizes practices of person-centered , strength based , cognitive behavioral and solution focused therapies. She believes in meeting people where they are in life and starting there to assist individuals to identify their personal goals and strengths to understand the relationship between their thoughts, emotions and behaviors and develop effective coping skills to manage symptoms and behaviors that are troublesome. Ultimately, she believes building a trusting and positive relationship with her clients determines how well they accomplish goals in treatment. Surani is a native of Sri Lanka and moved to the US with her family when she was 15 years old.
